Mean Gene Homeboi wuz here
So Rusty and I are playing tonight!! It's pouring so I'll be driving over the bay bridge at the height of rush hour in the rain --but hey, this is the first time we've been able to fix a firm date for weeks and his flatmates won't be home 'til after 8 so he can hit hard and we can turn the fuck up.

Gotta warm-up, wrote some silly new lyrics to a great old tune that I've always wanted to cover: Not your Steppin' Stone by The Monkees (was well-covered by the Pistols)

I'm Not Your Tranny Boi

I yi-yi-yi-yi'm not your Tranny Boi
I yi-yi-yi-yi'm not your Tranny Boi

When I first met you girl, you didn't have a clue
But now you're walkin' round like gender ended with you
You been so ambitious bout the peeps you use
nd why you put my name in your book of who's who?
Cuz baby:

I yi-yi-yi-yi'm not your Tranny Boi
I yi-yi-yi-yi'm not your Drag King Toy

You're trying to make your mark in the academe
You're droppin' all those names that you dropped on me
You're working on yr post-doctoral candidacy
Appropriating parts of my identity

I yi-yi-yi-yi m not your Tranny Boi
I yi-yi-yi-yi m not your Trendy Toy

You say you are an 'ally' in the family
cause you've appended 'T' to your LGB
You wanna know how many years I've been on T
and will I show my cock
for your documentary
but baby

I yi-yi-yi-yi'm not your Tranny Boi
I yi-yi-yi-yi m not your Trendy Toy ...

not your Tranny Boi -- No!
not your Tranny Boi -- Yeah!
not your Tranny Boi
not your Tranny Boi
not your Tranny Boi
not your Tranny Boi
not your Tranny Boi
not your Tranny Boi -oooooooooooooooooi

I have a very basic question...what is your personal definition of "kulture"? I mean how is it different from culture? and why are drag kings creating culture as opposed to continuing what was already there?

thanks!!

well, the semi-short answer would be:

both/& in other words we do contribute to the existant heterosexual/patriarchal mainstream culture as we simultaneously kreate unique drag king kultur that heretofore didn't exist as an artform. I use the "K" to denote our cooption and subversion of straight culture, as a verbal cue for our "queering" of something.

There was no drag king kulture before the 80's. Lone kings and the odd male impersonator do not a culture make. Women playing men in english panto, Joan of arc, Billy Tipton, are all forebears and gender-assignment defyers but it's my observation that the confluence of drag-butch tradition, gay liberation, punkrock/riot grrl/queercore, winning the butch-femme and sm wars in feminism and feminism full-stop all contributed to its emergence...as a kulture.

The Chicago Kings are part of it as is Kingdom magazine, the idke, the websites, the dk book, the drag bands here in sf and our dk musical, pat riarch's chapbook, 3rd antennae, venus boyz. There are no earlier equivalents. that's why people call us pioneers. that's why people want to write thesis and books and I'm all for that. I'm contributing much of my life to it.

Politically, our experimentations with & deconstruction of masculinities is not something that women were permitted to do before. As we all know too well, on the street there can still be a mortal price to play for challenging/passing/not-passing as the percieved assigned role.

specifically: the lyrics above are a satirical critique on the tendency of *some* Women/Gender Studies theoreticians to pronounce, conflate, codify and categorize gender expressions like drag king, butch, stonebutch, trans, ftm etc. It's also a statement about the growing confusion around the meaning of the word Tranny and whether or not its being colonized. I haven't made my mind up about this, neccessarily. As I songwriter I soak up stuff from my own environment and others and am not always the "I" in songs. One of the things I've been reading is an ongoing discussion on strap-on.org about whether non & pre-op peeps even have the right to self-id as trans/boi/ftm at all.

Think the line between butch, boi, trans, ftm is being ever more blurred and I am interested in talking about that and it's ramifications.
